OpenClaw vs Instaclaw
OpenClaw is an open-source agent framework you run and maintain yourself. Instaclaw is a different product: a personal intelligence that comes with its own computer, always on, that you never maintain.
If you searched for somewhere to host an agent, this page is the honest version of that answer. The two are not the same thing, and which one is right for you depends almost entirely on whether you want to own the machine or forget it exists.
Where self-hosting genuinely wins. If you want the machine to be yours in the legal sense, the data to never touch anyone else's infrastructure, and the freedom to fork the thing and change how it works, self-host. That is a real answer and no managed product can give it to you. We are not going to pretend otherwise to win a comparison.
Side by side
| Self-hosted OpenClaw | Instaclaw | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the machine | You do | We do, and you never touch it |
| Setup | Provision a server, install, configure, secure it | Sign up, pick where you want to text it |
| When it breaks at 3am | You fix it | It restarts itself |
| A dedicated machine per person | Yes, the one you rented | Yes, and it is included |
| Memory across conversations | Yours to build | Built in, and it compounds |
| Total control over every file | Complete | Yours, and we own uptime |
| Cost | A server, plus model usage, plus your time | From $49.99/month, models included |
What you actually get with Instaclaw
A dedicated Linux machine, yours alone, running around the clock, with a real filesystem, a real shell, and its own scheduled jobs. A memory that compounds across every conversation, so you stop re-explaining yourself.
You talk to it from iMessage, Telegram, or the web dashboard. Same agent, same memory, wherever you are. It gets better at being yours every week.
And the part that is easy to miss until 3am: nobody pages you. When something breaks, it restarts itself, and if it cannot, that is our problem rather than yours.
Here is exactly what you get, in numbers you can check
Two dedicated vCPUs, 4 GB of memory, 80 GB of disk, on a dedicated-CPU plan rather than a shared or burstable one, so there are no noisy neighbours. One machine per customer.
That is not a private unit of ours. It is a standard class of machine with a public price: look up a dedicated-CPU instance with those numbers at any major cloud provider and you can see roughly what that class costs before you give us anything at all.
We publish it because you should not have to take our word for what you are renting, and because you should be able to do that arithmetic yourself. When you do, the honest answer to what the rest of a subscription buys is this: the model calls, included, with no per-token bill to read; the memory that persists between conversations; and the routing that picks a model for each message. A box is not an agent.
We have been running dedicated agents for paying customers since February 2026.
One honest limit: the machine is yours for as long as you are a subscriber. If you stop paying it sleeps, and after about ninety days it is archived and the machine itself is released. Your data is kept, but we are not going to tell you it lasts forever when it does not.
Which should you pick
Self-host if running the machine is part of what you want, or if the data genuinely cannot leave your own infrastructure.
Use Instaclaw if what you actually wanted was the agent, not the server. Everything on our side of the table above is included, and your price never moves once you are on it.
